Tropic Thunder - a funny comedy :)
Short review: Rookie director abandons a cast of film stars in Cambodian jungle in order to prepare them properly for their roles in a high budget production - despite Ben Stiller, a funny comedy
The plot: A bunch of film divas team up to shoot a multi million $$$, apical movie about heroism in the Vietnam war. Things go anything but as planned as the big egos seem not capable of working together and staging great camaraderie. Until their harmless training/team building trip into the wild turns into a deadly serious run for their life’s…
Flickcritique says: I had serious doubts about that star cast
I mean Jack Black, who has been giving Po the animated KungFun Panda bear his voice recently, together with God-forbid-don’t-ever-act-again Ben Stiler and a reborn, addiction free Robert Downey Jr. aka Iron Man. Plus Tom Cruis and Tobey Maquire in their short parts. I thought this could only go badly, terribly wrong but since I’ve got the Unlimited Cinema Card I had nothing to lose but a little time
Surprisingly enough watching the movie I laughed my ass off and honestly enjoyed it! Even Stiller gives the audience some decent acting but most of the rest of the cast is just great. Kudos to the best Tom Cruise ever, playing an egomaniac producer and Maqurie for his short but very convincing appearance in the beginning of the movie
Best of all however is Robert Downey Junior fantastically over-playing Kirk Lazarus, an African American
I am recommending the Tropic Thunder flick outright to anyone looking for a good comedy
Watch it if you liked: Tropic Thunder kinda reminds me of There’s Something About Mary (1998) or Be Kind Rewind (2008). However, it’s probably because of the cast and similar slapstic then because of the plots, since they have little in common.

Iron Man - a bit boring
In a nutshell: A traumatizing near death experience turns an arrogant, super rich fella into an advocate for peace/Mr. nice guy. Unfortunately before starting his charity activities, first he’s got to build a super-armored, armed, flight suite and fight his evil business associate. Nice CGI, however way too little action for a Marvel comic adaptation ![]()
The story: Tony Stark, multimillionaire tycoon/brilliant engineer/jerk/playboy gets hurt during field testing of a new weapon for the US Army. Even worse, he gets kidnapped by cave living terrorists, who want to make him build a weapon. In order to escape he secretly builds an armored combat suite prototype in captivity. The design is so promising, he keeps improving it even after being rescued. Big surprise, the improved suite comes handy when Tony’s business associate decides to do what ever is needed to stop him from changing his life and the objectives of their war profiting syndicate.
Flickcritique says: It’s not happening frequently that I fall asleep watching “an action” movie but I did watching this one. I had a quick nap, somewhere in the middle of the long conversations
Don’t get me wrong, Robert Downey Jr. does a great job and Gwyneth Paltrow’s poor performance is being well compensated by (too) few super hot scenes with Leslie Bibb. I even liked the movie but there is just not enough action for a Marvel adaptation. Despite the eye candy and some good sense of humor I was a bit disappointed
Watch it if you liked: Spider-Man (2002), Hulk (2003), The Punisher (2004)
